So you think you want a husky??? *edit

Hu-mom took me to Petco today. On our way in we met a nice young couple & their 10 yr. old skin kid. They went ga-ga over me, gushing all about how they were just reading a book about siberians and how they think they want one. Then they started asking question like....

"Are they pretty good indoors by themselves?"
AH, WELL, DEFINE GOOD. AND YOU NEED AT LEAST TWO OF US.

"Are they easy to train?"
YES, WE'RE VERY SMART, BUT WE DON'T MUCH CARE WHAT YOU THINK WE SHOULD DO.
DON'T WORRY, WE'LL HAVE YOU TRAINED IN NO TIME.

"The book said they're very good at getting out. Do they really need a tall fence? Can you just put them out on a long chain?"
EXCUSE ME? YOU'RE NOT TYING ME OUT ON A LONG CHAIN 24/7. PERIOD.

"So they're more of an outside dog?
WE DON'T GROW ALL THIS FLUFF FOR NOTHING!

"What about the fur, do you have to groom them all the time?"
NO, JUST THE 361 1/2 DAYS A YEAR WHEN WE SHED!

and so on and so on.
Hu-mom did her best to explain that we are really wonderful dogs, just not for everybody. They looked pretty crest-fallen as mom went on about our prey drive, (I am SUCH a good hunter!) and gregrious no-I'm-not-a-good-watchdog-personality. They did like it that we are, overall, pretty quiet. (I know some huskies aren't, but I am) mom told them to go check out everythinghusky.com and be sure to read up before getting one of us so they know what they're committing to.

It's not that there aren't huskies that need homes, it's just that huskies need the right home. And sometimes people are better off giving a home to a deserving something-other-than-a-husky.

and Meeshka remined me not to forget - WE LOVE KLEENEX! (And I also the cold water fountains in those little rooms. I wish I could train the humans not to pee in them.)

I just needed to rant, I feel better now.

Woos,
Star

Oh, I know how that goes. We get the same questions when mom takes one of us somewhere. She is always sure to give them the good, and the bad of our breeds. No, we aren't easy, but we are fun and wonderful for the RIGHT family. We take a lot of patience, that's for sure. And even mom sometimes has a hard time finding hers when it comes to psycho boy Samuel. He has a tendency to be quite demanding when he wants something really bad! But, like mom always tells her friends, there's never a dull moment when you own a Siberian!

Yes Star, Mom agrees, Huskies are not for everyone, it takes a lot of patience and more importantly a lot of love to have a husky in your family. I know I try mom's patience a lot. It's a good thing she loves me so much.
I really like the picture with all your toys. You are so smiling happy.

Sometimes the Truth hurts when it's not what you want to hear.

And speaking of "needing two" ...
Anything with Fur showed up on the front porch yet?

Maybe ya otta park a Bisquit or two out there Star ... and send out a few *Wooooooos* tonight from the back yard. There's gotta be a "needy FurKid" somewhere on the Island!

i so agree with you star....and because i'm a border collie (that isn't suitable for everyone as well), i totally get what you mean!

we are a fun breed to be with, but in a home that can't give us the right amount of exercise and stimulation, we'll become total monsters!

i think all humans should consider if a breed is suitable for their lifestyles BEFORE they get a dog. If not, more and more of our canine counterparts will end up in shelters and that's not good! :(

Very good rant, and also good job on teaching those people that we're not fluffy toys that just sit there, we need love, exercise, and plenty of kleenex. Yes, you neglected to mention our need for kleenex. Pleae revise your rant to include our need for kleenex for next time.

Star, your clever answers to the family's questions made me laugh right out loud! Could you please ask your hu-mom to give you some petting for me, to thank you for helping me smile and laugh today!

Questions my mommy always gets about owning a Sibe is - "isn't it cruel that you always have them on a leash? Why can't they run along beside you off the leash?" My mom answers that we have a big, fenced-in backyard to run around in & get exercise. It's not cruel to keep us on a leash - it keeps us safe from running into a street from either getting hurt or lost. Huskies are not for everyone. I'm glad that I adopted my family. They keep me safe. I get lots of hugs & kisses & so does Juneau.

I just came by to say how sorry I am for you and your family. I jumped on the link from Billy's blog. I read the last few posts and almost cried. That is such terrible news. RB is a happy, healthy place and I am sure he is doing much better there. Again, I'm so sorry for you loss. Hope you and your family are doing 'okay'. My thoughts are definitely with you in this sad time.

Love,
Sweets

P.S. That's really good that you educated those people about Huskies. Huskies are amazing and beautiful, and I also heard that they are not for everyone. Good job!

Hey Star and momma,
I'm so glad to hear you were out and about and teaching people that huskies aren't the breed for everyone...although they are definitely the breed for us:-)
Roxey says she's not really into the Kleenex like you are, she's more into the bike rides (ohhh she does love her bike rides!). She loves to do some of that running that huskies are known for!
I wanted to tell you how much I love that picture of you on your bed with all your toys. That bed's just like my Roxey girls! Guess it's the blue to match the eyes.
Take care Star and momma.
Lots of hugs & husky woos to you.

Amici gets called a snow dog or sometimes a wolf (they apparantly don't know how big wolves can get). We think it is very important to research any breed of dog that someone is interested in. People should want dogs to become a part of their family and in order to do that the dog and the human need to have similar lifestyles. An unhappy dog can lead to an unhappy human and vice versa. I would hope that if a person has a love for animals they'd want to read more about the animal they'd want to have in their forever home. :)

Hope you have a good weekend.

It's good that your mom was a good husky lady and told them the stuff about huskies. Everyone thinks we are so cute, and no doubt we are, but we unique!!
