Sunday somewhere between Paradise & Purgatory

We're just hanging around today having fun...
its like paradise to play in the sun in our own yard
with mom & dad home too!

This might be a good time to address an issue on fb-
For some reason, facebook keeps insisting we live in "Purgatory"...
and (while that may well be true),  perhaps its referring to the local street
called Purgatory... which leads us to some interesting
local history....

Mom's always loved this intersection - pretty cool with the steeple of
St. Georges (private school)  in the background, isn't it?
We cross it when we go to Sachuest beach.

And right around the corner is "Purgatory Chasm".
We went walking there with Mom... and believe us, it is much more dramatic when woo
stand on the bridge directly above it!    Its DEEP, and those cliffs go straight down!
(mom put it in big so woo get the effect)

Mom found two legends about it:

"It is said that in the 1500-1600s, a young Native American was chasing a young woman,
perhaps the unrequited object of his affections, and as they reached Purgatory Chasm,
she leapt across safely but he did not and fell to his death. Some say his ghost is trapped
there, searching for the woman and chasing visitors through the wooded trails there…"
another account:
"In this legend, an Indian woman murdered a white man near Wickford. Just as she
attempts to escape, a stern-looking English gentleman appears, asking if she will
walk with him for a short distance. She balks, but cannot escape before he seizes
her by the arm. As she cries out for Hobomoko to save her, her attacker reveals,
"I'm Hobomoko." Then, dropping his disguise, the devil grabs her by the waist,
stamps the ground fiercely once or twice, and flies with her to Purgatory Chasm,
plunging her into its turbulent waters. "

Woo, both are kinda scary!   Hope woo are having fun this weekend too!

A-roos  to yous & Toodle-woo!

hey Jack and Moo,

Very interesting post! Love the photo of you two playing in Paradise! The Purgatory photo is a bit scary, but beautiful. That does seem like quite a drop, though! My human really enjoyed the two legends about the place.

P.S. I meant to woof that the photo of the street names, with the steeple behind the "Paradise" street sign, is very cool!
